I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love making and creating things but in high school a very special art teacher, Miss Fontinel, inspired hundreds of students to draw, paint, model, and much more. In her class, the world of “art” came alive for me. I received a BA in art from Hood College, Frederick, MD. As a small liberal arts college, most of the course offerings were art history. Studio courses were limited, but I took every one offered. Alas, upon graduation, my formal training and art career came to a halt when I moved to New York City and embarked on a 30-year career in book publishing. It was exciting to work with authors, book production staff, graphic designers, photographers, printers and marketing folk. My husband Steve and I ran McGraw-Hill’s 10 professional books clubs and when they were shut down, we took the opportunity to find a place we really wanted to live. It turned out to be Savannah, GA and The Landings where we moved in 2000.
The move has been transformational. At about that time I had started to paint again. The local marshes, Intracoastal Waterway, lagoons and natural beauty of the low country are inspirational. I try to capture their ever-changing colors, textures, and moods. I paint only in oil and am for the most part self taught. I have enjoyed the opportunity of studying with local artists and the inspiration and support of the LAA and of so many really talented artists here. I’ve received numerous awards from the LAA
While I’m inspired to capture the natural beauty of our environs, I am equally driven by the creative process itself. Winston S. Churchill said it well, “Happy are the painters, for they shall not be lonely. Light and color, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end, or almost to the end, of the day.”
I work full time as a business intermediary with my husband in the VR Business Sales office we opened 11 years ago. Helping business owners sell their businesses is very interesting and rewarding. It may limit the time I can devote to painting but not my enthusiasm.
