I began studying art at age nine. My teacher was an award winning painting graduate of the Philadelphia college of art. I continued under her tutelage until graduating from high school. My love of art and experience grew as I became adept at drawing/painting caricatures, portraits and designing backdrops for plays while in college. As a result I was selected to serve as art editor for the yearbook and school newspaper.
At Converse College I involved myself in studio art classes and served as art editor, illustrator and cartoonist for the student newspaper and literary magazine.
I also studied art at PfeifferCollege took summer classes in studio art and art history at UNC in Chapel Hill. After graduation I married “Salty”Forbes and moved to Athens, Ga. while he completed law school. After his graduation we decided Savannah would become our future home.
Moving to the historic district I quickly became involved with the Savannah Art Association, continued taking classes and entering art shows while taking commissions. During this time I was painting portraits and caricatures for conventions in Savannah, Hilton Head and taking regional portrait commissions and drawing advertising illustrations for various local business. We built our home and moved to Skidaway Island in 1987. I became a charter member of the Landings Art Association and built a new base for portraits and now landscapes on the island. I have served as program chairman twice and co-president, 2005-06. Over the years I have continued my art education taking classes with SCAD professors and nationally known artists, such as Daniel Greene and Everett Kinstler.
I am a member of the Portrait Society of America and the Savannah Portrait Society and have commissioned paintings throughout america and some foreign countries.
About the work:
My emphasis in painting is to capture a likeness that conveys the spirit of my client with satisfaction, a must. I take commissions for paintings in oil, pastel and acrylic. For portrait commissions I prefer to take my own photographs of clients to use along with a sitting half way through a painting to make early corrections, if necessary. There is an exception using photography for post mortem portraits.
Clients confer with me on the selected photo and may purchase the (8″ x 10″) approval sketch or painting. Fifty percent of the fee is paid at the beginning of the portrait and the final fee a is due at completion. The price depends on the size of the portrait and number depicted in the portrait. I also take commissions for animal portraits, landscapes and caricatures.
